Using Bark as a Mulch
Mulch is a term used to describe a layer of natural materials applied to the surface of an area of soil. Mulch is often used to discourage weeds and condition the soil. Bark breaks down very slowly over the course of years so does not need constant replacement. However, we do suggest topping up every 2 – 3 years to allow for displacement through cultivation or animal disturbance.
We’d recommend that Bark should be laid to a depth of between 2 and 4 inches. But do be careful not to lay too thickly as this can deprive the soil and plant roots of oxygen; or too thinly, as this will increase the soil’s exposure to sunlight and may hinder weed control.
Bark works well for winter conditions too. During winter, the cycles of freezing and thawing can damage plants. Mulching will help to keep ground frozen, so plants can remain dormant through the crucial winter resting months.
The best time to mulch is after the first hard frost – but before any heavy snowfall. A layer of at least 2-4 inches should applied around plants and gently pulled back from any trunks or stems to allow for aeration.
