A wildflower area is a truly low maintenance option for gardens, parks, school gardens, public amenity areas and many other places when a splash of native colour is needed. Creating an area for nature, birds, bees and other pollinators is a simple way to support our environment.  An established meadow produces vital nectar sources for our native pollinators and perches for various beetle and grasshopper species.

The Turffit Cornfield Annual Wild Flower Seed mix grows well in sunny areas and will reward you with an array of colourful flowers year after year.  To ensure the ongoing success of a wildflower area we recommend some simple care steps.

How to get the best from your Turffit Cornfield Annual Wild Flower Seed Mix

Growing.  Let nature do its stuff and allow the wildflower area to grow unchecked from early spring right through till late summer. This will ensure that the flowers will grow through to seed providing next year’s stunning display.

Mowing. Once the seed heads are formed and most of the flowers have gone over, cut the area to about 10cm (4 inches) high. Let the cuttings dry – this takes a couple of days in hot weather – then remove all cuttings. This is important as you don’t really want the cuttings to mulch and form a compost which will encourage growth.  Wildflower areas grow best in less fertile areas.

Sowing. In autumn, you can now add more flowering species.  If too much grass is a problem, why not try to add some Yellow Rattle. Yellow Rattle is a plant that weakens grass plants,

Winter Maintenance. Run the lawnmower over your wildflower meadow a couple of times throughout the autumn and winter but keep the blades set high and the grass box ON. This will help to reduce soil fertility and keep the meadow looking neat. It also lets seeds and seedlings have enough light to germinate and grow.
