How to Measure Your Lawn: The Turffit Guide to Getting it Right First Time

At Turffit, we’re proud of our premium, homegrown Scottish turf, and we want to make sure your project gets off to the best start possible. Measuring your lawn doesn’t have to be a headache. Whether you have a simple square plot or a more “adventurous” garden shape, our online calculator does the heavy lifting for you.

Here is how to measure up like a pro to ensure you get exactly what you need.

Option 1: The “Jigsaw” Method (Irregular Shapes)

If your garden isn’t a perfect square, don’t worry. The easiest way to handle odd angles and curves is to break them down into smaller sections.

  1. Sketch it out: Grab a piece of paper and draw a rough outline of your garden shape.
  2. Section it off: Divide your drawing into rectangles or squares.
  3. Measure the ground: Now, head outside! Measure the actual length and width of each “section” on your lawn that you’ve drawn on your paper.
  4. The Calculation: For each section, use Length x Width = Area. (For example, if Section A is 5m x 4m, that’s 20m²).
  5. Add them up: Add the totals of all your sections together to get your final figure.
  6. The Calculator: Simply type that final grand total into the “Total Area (m²)” box on our calculator.

Option 2: The Classic Rectangle

This is the most common way to measure and is nice and straightforward.

  • How to do it: Measure the longest side (Length) and the widest side (Width) of your lawn.
  • The Formula: Length x Width = Total Area (e.g., 5m x 4m = 20m²).
  • The Total: Pop that final number into the “Total Area” box on our calculator.

Turffit Tip: If your lawn has a small “nib” or a corner cut out, it’s usually safer to measure it as a full rectangle. Having a few offcuts to play with is much better than running short!

Option 3: The Circle

Adding a circular feature or a curved centrepiece? You don’t need to be a maths expert to get this right.

  • How to do it: Measure the widest point across the centre of the circle (from one edge to the other). This is your Diameter.
  • Example: If your circular lawn is 6 metres across from edge to edge, enter “6” into the Diameter box.
  • The Formula: Our calculator uses π × (Radius)² to find the exact square meters for you.
  • The Result: Just enter the diameter into our calculator and let us do the rest!

The “Golden Rule”: Add 5% for Wastage

This is the most important step in the process! Even the most perfect garden requires some trimming to get a professional finish.

  • Why? You will naturally lose small pieces of turf as you “cut to fit” around corners, curves, or paths.
  • The Calculation: If your total area is 40m², we recommend ordering 42 rolls (each of our standard rolls covers 1m²).
  • Money Saver: It is much cheaper to order two extra rolls now than it is to pay for a separate delivery later because you were just a few rolls short!

Ready to get started?

Once you have your numbers, head over to our Turf Calculator to see how many rolls you need.
