Our Love for Lawns

Most of us grew up with grass. As the poet said we live in a green and pleasant land. Grass is still the cheapest food for our livestock.
This love of grass has translated itself into a love affair with lawns in some cases an obsession. This desire to create a perfect sward of green. In the past a lawn was in many cases just a well cut field like many orchards.
Today in any garden large or small a lawn can become an important and vital extension to the house. Many estate agents estimate an attractive garden can increase the value of a house by up to 20%.
A lawn brings together the shrubs and flowers acting as an outdoor carpet. You don’t have to be short of ideas as the number of television programmes and books testify a good lawn like a good marriage can grow into something to be loved and enjoyed. It can be our way to a woman’s heart. However it needs plenty of T.L.C – feeding, weeding, watering and cutting.
A lawn grown from seed is a true labour of love. In the British Isles there seems to be only about two months in the year when it is suitable for sowing seed. The ground must be prepared with great care.
You need rain and sun (but not too much of either) before and after sowing. You must have a great deal of patience and a fair amount of luck. A newly sown lawn will attract birds that you have never seen before like friends to a lottery winner.
After all it’s much more fun eating your delicious new seed than finding other food. A good cat or dog can be a deterrent but you don’t want their paw prints all over the newly sown ground.
Grass and poetically its quality are evolving all the time. Lawn seed is a sophisticated industrial product with hundreds of varieties developed by a great deal of research and testing. Golfers will tell you how much the greens have improved at their club. The state of the green can always be blamed for a missed putt but with far less justification. Today Green keepers are highly trained. The best ones are much sought after. The Scottish Rugby at Murrayfield has seen a tremendous improvement in its playing surfaces.
All this research into producing better grass or in a gardener’s case lawn benefits us all. If you don’t want to grow a lawn from scratch you can buy an instant lawn from Turffit. You can see the finished product before you buy it. You can choose a suitable quality for your needs. Whether it is for young boys playing football, a pets Playground or that perfect putting surface.
If you have a lawn, enjoy it. If you have the opportunity to create a lawn, grab it. A good love affair is always worth continuing.
